WHY MARANS?
Originating in the southwestern port town of Marans France, Marans hens are known lay the darkest brown eggs. In 1930 the Marans chickens were presented for exhibition in France. The first standard was created in 1931 and published in a variety of poultry farming magazines. By 1932 a second standard was published, identifying six varieties.
Marans eggs are famous for the unique shape and colour of the eggshell. The egg shape is roundish and the colour is described in varying degrees of brown, appearing like melted chocolate; thus the term, chocolate eggers. Marans eggs are visually beautiful and considered a delicacy by foodies, hobbyists and chefs everywhere.
Marans chickens are known for their calm temperament and large frame, making them ideal for backyard flocks. The best birds have rich plumage or the bold markings. Well-bred Marans adult birds are truly stunning.
ABOUT US
Established in 2006, we are a hatchery located in east central Minnesota dedicated to raising and hatching pure Marans chickens. Our commitment to the breed has extended into several varieties. At this time, we have three solid strains - black copper, black and wheaten.
NorthStar Hatchery LLC follows American Poultry Association guidelines when choosing adult stock for breeding. Working with top Marans breeders throughout the country, it is our vision to extend our NorthStar line as the strain that does well in a winter climate.
Our birds are hybrid strain of bloodlines from award-winning flocks. Confirmation, egg color and feathering are our top priorities. In addition, our latest pursuit is egg laying productivity.
